Officially launched on July 10, 2008, Apple’s App Store marked its 10-year anniversary on Tuesday. As of this May, there were more than 2 million apps available on the App Store, according to a report from App Annie, a company that tracks data on app markets.
Over the store’s first decade of distributing iOS applications, the United States has been its largest market by app downloads and spending. American users recorded 40.1 billion downloads and spent $36 billion in the store from July 2010 to December 2017, according to App Annie.
Other top markets for downloads and spending are China, Japan and the U.K. Russia, meanwhile, was ranked No. 5 in downloads, but it wasn’t even even among the top 10 by spending.
The report also ranked the apps on which App Store users have spent the most money over the last decade. Media streaming apps have generated the most revenue in the store, with Netflix leading the list, followed by Spotify and Pandora Radio.
