Missouri sales tax holiday begins Friday, lasts through weekend

Missouri’s annual sales tax holiday runs from Friday through Sunday.

The event comes as school swings back into gear. For the weekend, purchases of clothing, school supplies, computers and other miscellaneous items will be exempt from the state’s sales tax of about 4.2 percent. A full list of the items exempt over the holiday can be found on the Missouri Department of Revenue website.

Some restrictions apply, including limiting clothing purchases to $100, school supplies to $50 and computer-related purchases to $1,500.

Online shopping also qualifies for the tax break, provided purchases happen from a participating city or county and the transaction happens during the weekend event.

Although all Missouri cities and taxing district can choose to participate in the holiday, not all have done so. More than 150 cities across the state have opted out of participating.
