A measure that proposed a strict countywide ban on indoor smoking in St. Charles County has been blocked from the November ballot by the county’s elections director, who cited technical flaws with the proposition.
St. Charles County Elections Director Rich Chrismer said a petition backing the measure had more than enough signatures, but that the language around implementation and financing of the new law was unclear.
Ben Murray, who’s part of the Show Me Smoke Free petition group, said backers of the plan were disappointed and considering a court challenge of the decision.
The proposal would ban smoking in all public venues, including bars, restaurants, stores, hotels, membership clubs and the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles.
