Steelworkers to vote on strike amid contract stalemate with U.S. Steel

Union steelworkers in the St. Louis area and across the country will vote Thursday about whether to strike against U.S. Steel.

A collective bargaining contract between the steelworkers and the Pittsburgh-based steel company ended Sept. 1, but negotiations were extended.

The contract includes about 1,200 workers in Granite City, Illinois, according to officials with the United Steelworkers.

The last time steelworkers in the suburban St. Louis facility went on strike was in 1993, when it was under different ownership.
