Philanthropist, Former UMB Leader Kemper Dies At 86

R. Crosby Kemper Jr., a banker, philanthropist and Kansas City civic booster, died Thursday night in Indian Wells, Calif.

His son, R. Crosby Kemper III, confirmed the death of a man best known for leading UMB Financial Corp., the Kansas City-based banking company, and who became a major contributor to agriculture, the arts and enterprise in Kansas City and, briefly, a dabbler in politics.

He donated liberally to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and in 1990 he gave $6 million to build the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Design.
