Buying Spree Fuels Growth Of KC’s Brier Payne Meade Insurance

Brier Payne Meade Insurance, a family-owned company passed down a generation two years ago, has snapped up three other agencies in the last year, effectively doubling its presence in the Kansas City area.

Brier Payne Meade’s two owners, Dennis and John Payne, sold their ownership stake to Dennis Payne’s sons, Jonathan and Timothy Payne. They brought in a partner, Rob Metzler, and immediately enacted an aggressive growth plan.

They bought Gliem & Associates, acquired a book of business from Kristy Mochel and, most recently, completed the acquisition of the Turner Agency in Belton. Brier Payne Meade also owns a minority stake in an agency to be named later in Wichita, with a deal in place to buy the rest of the business once its owner retires. And the company continues to look for other acquisitions.

“There are a lot of insurance agencies around the nation interested in being acquired, and we’re interested in growing,” Jonathan Payne said. “The way growth helps us is with volume-specific carriers, keeping them happy and giving us more clout with them. So we’re continually trying to grow in the markets that are important to us.”
