BJC HealthCare hired Knoxville, Tenn. based TeamHealth, ending its contract with Emergency Consultants Inc. based out of Michigan. The contract with ECI varied in length depending on the hospital, with some hospitals having worked with the company for more than 20 years.
TeamHealth will take over in nine of BJC’s hospitals in the state, including Barnes-Jewish St. Peters and Boone Hospital Center. The switch between companies could mean that some emergency physicians might not be rehired by TeamHealth.
BJC has cut costs recently, with a systemwide layoff of 160 employees and limits put on health insurance coverage. The $4 billion health system is led by CEO Steve Lipstein.
