The Missouri insurance department said consumers collected $871,000 as a result of complaints against health insurers during the first half of this year. Overall, Missouri consumers filed 901 formal complaints with the department against health insurance companies during that time period.
That number topped the list of overall insurance disputes investigated so far this year. Auto insurance complaints were second with 375 grievances filed.
The amount collected from health companies comprised only 12 percent of the total $7.4 million collected by the department for all insurance complaints. The top health insurance issues were inadequate access to care, a lack of out-of-network benefits and narrow provider networks.
