UMKC gets OK to ask state for funding for downtown campus

The University of Missouri-Kansas City received approval from the board of curators to request $48 million in matching funds from the Missouri legislature for the construction of a proposed Downtown Campus for the Arts.

UMKC privately raised $48 million with the help of the Kansas City community and a $20 million donation from the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation. That money was necessary before approaching the state for matching funds for the $96 million project. The 50-50 matching program is designed to fund capital projects at public colleges and universities in Missouri.

In the first phase of the project, UMKC’s Conservatory of Music and Dance will be relocated near the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
