Ikea, the Swedish furniture and home accessory retailer, has announced that its store under construction in the Kansas City area is on schedule, despite the hard winter months. The store should open in the fall, employing 300 people.

The store, located in Merriam, Kan., will occupy 359,000 square feet and feature an inventory of more than 10,000 items. It will include a restaurant and a supervised area for children.

Ikea said that Kansas City is an ideal location for the store, since there is a large potential customer base. Currently, the closest store to Kansas City is in Minneapolis.

Recruiting for management positions is to begin in the next several weeks. Hiring for sales and support staff will begin after management hiring is completed.
