Greenbrier Rebuffs American Railcar Bid

Greenbrier Cos. said a $542 million bid made this week by billionaire investor Carl Icahn’s American Railcar Industries is too low and instead expressed interest in buying the St. Charles-based company “at a modest premium.” American Railcar had offered to buy Greenbrier for $20 a share in cash.

American Railcar designs and manufactures hopper and tank railcars. Greenbrier, which is based in Oregon and designs and manufactures railroad freight car equipment, said a combination of the companies could be beneficial to both companies and their shareholders.
