Backers Project $540M Boost From Proposed St. Louis Streetcar

Downtown St. Louis boosters are working on making a vision of a seven-mile street car system a reality, with the goal of economic development between the city’s central west end and downtown.

Backers of the idea hope to see the streetcar system bring $540 million in economic development over the first five years of operation.

The plan involves two 50-passenger streetcar lines. The earliest the streetcars would be in operation would be 2016, according to a URS Corp., which is conducting a $200,000 study into the feasibility of the project.
