St. Louis Trolley Project Gets Federal Approval

The Federal Transit Administration has given preliminary approval for a trolley in the Delmar Loop, moving the streetcar project closer to its targeted construction start in early 2014.

Earlier this year, the agency had expressed concern that the project’s backers hadn’t made enough progress, putting at risk about $22 million of some $25 million in federal funds that the Loop Trolley Transportation Development District had been allotted. But an FTA official wrote that the addition of Metro engineering staff “dramatically improved” project management, according to industry publication Railway Age.

Earlier this month, TriMet of Portland, Ore., approved the sale of two vintage trolleys to the Loop Trolley Transportation Development District for $80,000, to be paid over time, according to Railway Age.
