Uber Ride-Sharing Legal In KC, Mayor Says

Kansas City Mayor Sly James said in a tweet that Uber Technologies Inc. is now operating inside the law in Kansas City, and the company’s general manager said Uber’s ride-sharing service has been so successful in the city that it’s hiring another manager.

But there’s a catch: James’ spokeswoman pointed out that the mayor’s comment referred to the fact that the San Francisco-based ride-sharing company is not charging for its services. Until Uber charges for its services, it is legally operating. She said Uber is working with city staff to to go through the process to get a permit.

Uber and another San Francisco-based ride-sharing company, Lyft Inc., found themselves at the center of a local controversy when they arrived in the city earlier this spring.
