The Port Authority of Kansas City and operator Kaw Valley Cos. announced that the port, which has been closed since 2007, will be reopened and freight will start landing there by the spring. Kaw Valley’s vice president of operations said the Kansas City company signed a lease with the Port Authority to take over control of operations at the port situated at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers.

He said Kaw Valley will use the port itself but it will be open to anyone interested in moving freight by barge. The authority, with funding assistance from the state of Missouri and elsewhere, has invested about $2 million to get the port ready to operate again.
