Work begins on Lee’s Summit highway interchange backed by area businesses

The design of a new Lee’s Summit highway interchange, campaigned for by area manufacturing and distribution companies and expected to spur development in the area, has begun in the Kansas City suburb.

The project, for which construction could begin in 2016, would open up a key gateway to Lee’s Summit and its downtown, and it could also open 300 acres for industrial development.

The interchange will cost about $16 million, with $8 million of that coming from a general obligation bond. A federal grant would provide $6.8 million, and MoDOT would cover the rest of the cost.
