Governor exploring I-70 toll system

A report by the Missouri Transportation Commission outlines options for creating and financing a toll system to pay for an overhaul of Interstate 70 across the state. The report delivered to Gov. Jay Nixon this week said the minimum cost of rebuilding the interstate from Independence to Wentzville, a distance of about 200 miles, is estimated at $2 billion. That option would add an eastbound and westbound lane in the existing median of I-70. The commission’s report outlines several options — including public-private partnerships — for creating a toll system and overhauling the highway. It also details the potential economic impact of rebuilding the highway, saying the project would generate thousands of jobs.

The report also addresses how the toll system would work and calls for an open system that would not require toll booths.
