MoDOT’s Five-Year Plan Slashes Improvement Budget

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission released today its five-year plan for its Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, and the numbers tell a troubling story. The 2013—17 budget calls for an average annual fund of $700 million, down from the current coffer amount of $1.2 billion. According to MoDOT, the cuts could turn out better than the alternative:

“Last year, MoDOT implemented the Bolder Five-Year Direction, which is reducing the number of employees, equipment and facilities in order to save the department $512 million by 2015. In fact, without the savings generated from the Bolder Five-Year Direction, this year’s transportation program would have been less than $600 million.”
