Internet service provider Wisper is tackling the task of developing broadband networks in 65 counties across Missouri, to be completed in the next decade.
In August, Wisper learned it would be awarded more than $176 million by the Federal Communications Commission to complete the project. Now, the Illinois-based company is beginning development.
Wisper must build out 40 percent of its assigned broadband network within three years to remain eligible for federal subsidies. The company must then increase its development by 20 percent each year until the project is complete. Franklin, Madison and Perry County are set to be the biggest beneficiaries of the new broadband networks with approximately $10 million in development going towards each.
The FCC will distribute $1.48 billion to 103 internet service providers in 45 states to bolster the nation’s broadband networks. Missouri will receive a total $254.7 million in subsidies to 11 providers, more funding than any other state.
