Close to a quarter of respondents to a new Pew Research Center survey said they have earned money through the “platform economy” in the last year, but pay is not the most commonly cited motivation for these workers.
“Fun” was the top reason cited for participating in the platform economy, or on-demand freelance work enabled by software platforms like Uber and Upwork. Some 42 percent of respondents said they have worked in the platform economy because it gave them something to do in their spare time.
