As state police come to Ferguson, businesses ponder future

Amid growing scrutiny of police treatment of protesters and media in Ferguson, Gov. Jay Nixon ordered that the Missouri Highway Patrol take over security of Ferguson from St. Louis County police. Meanwhile, owners of small businesses in the community were left to wonder how the events of the last few days might affect the future of a community that has worked hard in recent years to gain positive attention.

Kansas City Council approves incentives for Cerner campus

The Kansas City Council approved city subsidies for the proposed Cerner Corp. campus in south Kansas City. The 290-acre campus for the North Kansas City-based health care IT company would cost an estimated $4.45 billion.

St. Louis banks see increased loans, profits

Lending by banks in the St. Louis area increased 5 percent in the first half of the year, driven by upticks in commercial and industrial loans, commercial real estate loans and small loans to businesses.

PSC staff opposes ban on payday lenders collecting utility payments

The Missouri Public Service Commission has dealt a blow to an effort to prevent Missouri payday lenders from accepting utility bill payments. In a report filed this week, the PSC’s staff recommended no ban on the practice.
