Shamrock Trading Corp. announced Tuesday that it will build a $250 million facility across the street from its headquarters Overland Park, Kansas. The freight brokerage and logistics firm said the expansion will help create 1,000 jobs over the next five years that will pay an average salary of $56,000. Read more

UM System curators move to appeal graduate employee ruling

The University of Missouri System Board of Curators has filed a notice of appeal that challenges a June decision regarding a lawsuit brought against the board by graduate student workers. In the June decision, Circuit Judge Jeff Harris ruled that graduate workers are employees according to the state constitution. Read more

Health groups submit signatures for St. Louis County smoking ban referendum

Proponents of a stricter smoking ban for St. Louis County submitted about 51,000 signatures Tuesday in an effort to put the issue on the Nov. 6 ballot. The measure would end exemptions for casino gaming floors and dozens of bars. The exemptions were part of the county’s current smoke-free law, which took effect in 2011. Read more

Kansas City strikes formal deal with scooter startup Bird

Kansas City has reached a six-month deal with Bird Rides, Inc. that will allow the scooter-sharing startup to have as many as 500 of its scooters on the city’s streets while generating revenue — and potentially user data — for the city. Read more

Rate cut for Ameren users kicks in Wednesday

A 6 percent rate decrease for Ameren customers in Missouri takes effect Wednesday. The St. Louis-based utility credits the estimated $167 million cut, which was approved last last month, to savings resulting from the federal tax overhaul approved last December. Read more
