The U.S. Air Force will request funds for eight new F-15X fighter-bombers from Boeing, a move that could boost the aircraft’s production facility in the St. Louis area.
The purchase will be proposed in the Air Force’s fiscal year 2020 budget, which is expected to be submitted around March 11, as the first of a potential 80-plane purchase over the next five years.
The request has backing from the White House but is expected to raise some questions from lawmakers. For years, the Air Force has said it needs more F-35s, a newer plane produced by Boeing rival Lockheed Martin.
Boeing has produced the F-15 planes in St. Louis for sale to U.S. allies like Israel, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
