With Emerson Departing, Congressional Contenders Emerging

At least a half-dozen Southeast Missouri Republicans are lining up to seek the 8th District congressional seat following U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson’s announcement that she will step down in February.

Current and former office-holders with ties to the district were mentioned among potential contenders Monday, among them Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder of Cape Girardeau, Missouri Republican Party executive director Lloyd Smith and a handful of state lawmakers.
