Nixon Picks Longtime Loyalists for Key Positions

Gov. Jay Nixon, who often chooses loyalists who worked for him in the attorney general’s office for key positions throughout state government, announced two such selections in one day.

Gail Vasterling will serve as acting director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, which handles everything from issuing birth certificates to inspecting nursing homes.

Nixon chose Nancy Johnston as the state’s director of personnel, a post that falls under the Office of Administration. Both formerly worked in the attorney general’s office.

Last year, Johnston coordinated a state resource center in Joplin after that city was hit by a deadly tornado. This year, she worked in the economic development department.
