Unions’ membership rolls dropped by 398,000 nationwide last year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today, and union rolls fell by 51,000 in Missouri.
That left the state with a below-average unionization rate of 8.9 percent, down from 10.9 percent in 2011. Nationwide, 11.3 percent of workers belonged to unions last year, down from 11.8 percent in 2011.
Missouri showed a post-recession increase in union membership in 2010 and 2011. Last year’s decline more than wipes out that increase.
