Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback paid a visit to the new AMC Theatres Support Center in Leawood, Kan., downplaying the economic incentive “border war” that helped bring the company there. He said the shift of more than 400 AMC employees from a downtown officer tower on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro area to the gleaming suburban facility in Kansas would strengthen not just his state but the Kansas City area as a whole.
Brownback acknowledged the competition that has led several companies to hop from one side of the Missouri-Kansas border to the other could be a “zero sum game” in terms of employment, but he said it was most important to focus on job retention for the Kansas City metro as a whole. He also mentioned he was “negotiating something” with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon regarding the states’ incentive battle.
