Nixon Criticizes Sales Tax Hike For Transportation

Gov. Jay Nixon came out strongly against a proposal on the Aug. 5 ballot that would raise the state sales tax by three-fourths of a cent for transportation projects. The proposed tax increase “would fall disproportionately on Missouri’s working families and seniors …  while giving the heaviest users of our roads a free pass,” Nixon said in a statement. The governor also chastised legislators for proposing to increase the sales tax rate while passing “special breaks and carve-outs for the wealthy and well-connected” — a reference to eight bills passed on the final day of the legislative session that would grant sales tax exemptions to various businesses.
