Although the language of Missouri’s transportation sales tax ballot has not been finalized, the Missouri Association for Social Welfare has made the first legal challenge of the tax.

The current ballot language for the tax proposes a temporary sales tax of three-quarters of one percent to raise $480 million annually for state transportation projects and another $54 million for local governments.

The organization said the temporary ballot language is vague and underestimates the actual increase in sales tax. Missouri’s Secretary of State will be required to write the final language for the ballot measure by June 30, in time for it to be put on the August ballot.
