Jay Nixon ordered state auditor Tom Schweich to conduct a special audit of the St. Louis recorder of deeds office.

A statement from Nixon’s office did not provide a reason for the audit. Longtime recorder of deeds Sharon Carpenter resigned from the position earlier this year after reports surfaced that she paid her great-nephew $12,000 for work he did between 2010 and 2012, in violation of state nepotism laws.

Carpenter is seeking reelection in November. Schweich’s office said the audit will not be done by Election Day.
