Congressman Long finds demand for auctioneering skills in Washington

When Billy Long won his first congressional election in 2010, he thought his 30-year career as an auctioneer was over. But the Springfield Republican’s skills from his previous career remain in high demand in Washington.

Long has done more than a dozen auctions since being elected, helping raise money for a variety of charitable causes. He said he gets 10 to 12 requests a year to headline charity or other fundraising events. He accommodates those requests whenever he can.

He’ll even indulge the occasional request to perform off-the-cuff at Washington gatherings. “(People) love it because it’s such a unique profession,” Long said. “You will go to a party up here and (people say), ‘Let us hear you auction Billy. Sell us something Billy.'”
