Obama proposes $75 million in federal funds for police body cameras

President Barack Obama on Monday proposed spending $75 million in federal matching funds to finance body cameras for policemen.

The announcement came on a day that Obama held three separate meetings about Ferguson, signaling the administration’s efforts to address issues raised by the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown in the St. Louis suburb.

The program would mirror one that helped equip officers across the country with body armor and would require local police departments to buy into the initiative.

The $75 million would be part of a $263 million three-year initiative that would also include more local police training.
