Bill proposes Missouri school accreditation by building, not disrict

State Rep. David Wood, R-Versailles, pre-filed a bill in the Missouri House that proposes to revise the state’s school transfer system. The bill would establish an accreditation system that would evaluate each school by building instead of evaluating entire districts. As a result, students in an unaccredited building could transfer to an accredited school within the same district.

Some lawmakers believe the school transfer law presently in place — which allows students to transfer from failing school districts to well-performing ones — is likely to bankrupt certain districts.

Last year, Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed the bill filed to change the state’s current law because he said that it would create a channel for public money to flow to private schools.
