Calling Interstate 70 one of Missouri’s “most pressing transportation infrastructure needs,” Gov. Jay Nixon on Tuesday asked the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission to prepare a report analyzing the use of tolls to repair the roadway.
Nixon said charging tolls for I-70 would make the state’s scarce transportation funding available for road and bridge projects.
Missouri Department of Transportation officials have suggested tolls before, most recently three years ago, but the idea failed to gain traction in the state legislature.
MoDOT officials said they were reviewing Nixon’s request and would try to meet the governor’s Dec. 31 deadline for a report.
