Efforts to expand Medicaid have picked up momentum in some conservative states since midterm elections in November, with three Republican governors announcing proposals to use federal money to insure low-income adults. But Missouri doesn’t appear likely to join that crowd.
Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon supports expanding Medicaid, but veto-proof Republican majorities in the House and Senate make that unlikely. Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey, R-St. Charles, said Medicaid expansion is “off the table” during the upcoming legislative session.
Proponents of expansion continue meeting and working on behalf of the cause, but some are clearly discouraged.
