Gov. Jay Nixon announced Thursday he will lead an agricultural trade mission to Cuba from March 1-4. Representatives from the Missouri Rice Council, the Missouri Forest Products Association, the Dairy Farmers of America and the Missouri Farm Bureau will take part in the trip.
The Democratic Governor has been a vocal supporter of President Barack Obama’s decision to normalize relations with the communist country, and Nixon last week ordered his Agriculture Department to explore trade opportunities with Cuba.
Nixon said the trade mission gives Missouri the chance to be a leader in something that “30 or 40 years ago, people wouldn’t have thought possible.”
U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, will also visit Cuba. She has announced a trip before the end of February to discuss agricultural trade.
