Republican Jay Ashcroft, the son of former Missouri politician and U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, has announced he plans to run for Missouri secretary of state in 2016.

Jay Ashcroft, a St. Louis attorney and engineer, emphasized his desire to help create businesses and jobs.

“Missouri is desperately in need of leaders who will fight for our state’s common sense conservative values,” Ashcroft said in a statement. “I will work to protect the integrity of our elections while ensuring the office’s business functions are streamlined to allow Missouri employers to focus on what they do best: creating businesses and jobs.”

Jason Kander, the current secretary of state, announced Thursday that he will run for Republican Roy Blunt’s U.S. Senate seat in 2016.
