A political group that attacked Tom Schweich in radio ads is run by a consultant for Catherine Hanaway, who would have been Schweich’s top competition for the Republican nomination for Missouri governor in 2016.
Schweich, the former Missouri auditor, died in an apparent suicide on Feb. 27. Since then, he has become a symbol of the toll that nasty personal attacks can take on politicians.
Citizens for Fairness in Missouri was created to fight a smoking ban in St. Joseph. The Post-Dispatch says Jeff Roe, a Kansas City political consultant who has been hired by Hanaway to manage her campaign, resurrected the group earlier this year to air anti-Schweich ads on the radio. Citizens for Fairness is a consulting group, which is not supposed to be directed by a candidate under Missouri law.
