Missouri’s two top legislative leaders will join Gov. Jay Nixon on an eight-day trade trip through Germany, Italy and Spain that begins Friday.
The European excursion will mark the first time House Speaker John Diehl and Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey, both Republicans, have traveled abroad with Nixon, a Democrat. The legislators and governor have been at odds on various issues, but Nixon said that the three men will present a “unified front” for Missouri business on the trip.
The trade trip will seek to build new markets for Missouri exports, and to increase foreign investment in the state. The three countries currently combine to purchase more than $570 million a year in Missouri products.
