Spence Jackson, a veteran state official and the media director for former Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich, has been found dead in his Jefferson City apartment, according to multiple reports. Jackson’s death is being investigated as a suicide.
Jackson’s death comes about a month after Schweich, the auditor and 2016 Republican gubernatorial hopeful for whom Jackson had worked since 2011, committed suicide.
Jackson called for the resignation of Missouri Republican Party Chairman John Hancock after Schweich’s death. The former auditor was said to be upset over Hancock’s role in spreading rumors about Schweich being Jewish, which Schweich believed was designed to hurt his political campaign.
Before working for Schweich, Jackson, 44, worked as the communications director for the Missouri Department of Economic Development and as spokesman for former Gov. Matt Blunt.
