GOP leaders seek pay raises for state employees

Republican leaders in the Missouri House of Representatives are calling for Gov. Jay Nixon to use increased state revenue to build a pay raise for state employees into the next state budget.

The state’s $26 billion budget for fiscal 2016, which began July 1, does not include a pay hike for state employees. House Speaker Todd Richardson, R- Poplar Bluff, and budget committee chairman Tom Flanigan, R-Carthage, are among the GOP leaders recommending the Democratic governor raise state workers’ wages.

Backers of the bill say it will make Missouri more competitive with other employers, who are currently luring employees away from the state.
