Nixon, legislative leaders push for stiffer ethics laws

Since taking office in 2009, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has regularly pushed for stricter ethics laws for public officials, including bringing back campaign donation limits, which were repealed in 2008.

Generally, Republican legislative leaders have supported the idea of limiting lobbyists’ gifts, but neither Nixon nor lawmakers have much political muscle behind their proposals. However, in the wake of the General Assembly’s recent scandals over college-age interns, new Republican leaders of the state House and Senate say this coming legislative session,  which will be Nixon’s last before leaving office, should lead to the passage of stricter ethics laws.

In fact, new House Speaker Todd Richardson, R-Poplar Bluff, says the ethics issue will be his top legislative priority when lawmakers return to Jefferson City in January.
