Missouri Citizens for the Arts delivered 1,006 letters to Gov. Jay Nixon on Tuesday seeking consideration for the Missouri Arts Council during budget talks.
Backers of the effort said they were pleased to more than double their goal of 500 letters.
The Missouri Arts Council is a division of the Department of Economic Development that tries to increase arts participation, help the state economically through art and strengthen education through art.
The group wants Nixon to recommend full funding for the arts this year. It says the state’s collection of the non-resident professional athlete and entertainers tax, boosted by playoff runs by Missouri teams, should should support that funding.
