CitiesStrong questions government consolidation in St. Louis area

In response to the criticism directed at St. Louis County’s municipal structure, a group of former and current municipal officials are launching CitiesStrong, a nonprofit group that aims to support “a balance of regional collaboration with local decision-making.”

The president of the group’s board of directors, former Shrewsbury mayor Bert Gates, said CitiesStrong was created to push back against what he said were “misconceptions about local government.”

CitiesStrong, which is primarily funded by the St. Louis County Municipal League, is conducting research and analysis about the costs and services of municipal governments. CitiesStrong has commissioned the Public Policy Research Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis to conduct the studies. The center’s first report, on Indianapolis, is slated to be released next week.
