St. Louis-based Emerson Electric has been the biggest corporate financial backer of Rep. Todd Akin‘s U.S. Senate campaign, but no more.
“We backed Todd Akin as a candidate who would help restore the U.S. economy. Given his recent comments, we no longer support his candidacy,” Emerson spokesman Mark Polzin said today.
Akin, who is under pressure to exit the U.S. Senate race from members his own party, including Presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and five Missouri politicians, reaffirmed on ABC’s “Good Morning America” today that he remains in the race for now.
Akin has drawn fire and national media attention for his comments on a Sunday TV news broadcast that women’s bodies can prevent conception in cases of “legitimate rape” and that pregnancy in such cases is “really rare.” Read more on St. Louis Business Journal.
