Five Missouri-based companies made the Fortune’s list of the 100 “Best Companies to Work For” for 2017.
Edward Jones ranked No. 5, the highest among the group of Missouri companies. This St. Louis-based financial advisory has more than 43,000 employees worldwide and made $6.7 billion in revenue in 2016. It has made the list for 18 years.
Burns & McDonnell was No. 16 on the list. The Kansas City-based engineering, architecture and construction firm is wholly employee-owned, and 94 percent of employees rated the company great place to work.
Veterans United Home Loans, the largest VA dedicated lender in the nation, followed at No. 27 on the list. It is the second year for the Columbia-based company, which was founded in 2002, to make the list.
World Wide Technology, an IT and software services company, ranked No. 40. With nearly 4,000 employees and $9.3 billion revenue, the Maryland Heights-based company has made the list six times.
Build-A-Bear Workshop, the Overland-based stuffed bear retailer, came in at No. 76. It employs more than 4,300 people with over 400 stores worldwide.
Nationally, internet giant Google topped the list for the sixth year in a row. Wegmans Food Markets, a private supermarket chain, and The Boston Consulting Group, the global consulting firm, rounded out the top three.
The list is annually produced by Fortune and Great Place to Work and based on survey feedback from random samples of more than 230,000 employees. Employees are asked to evaluate factors including their leaders, relationships with colleagues and support from the company. Those results are then compared with peer organizations of similar size and complexity.
