Protests continued in parts of the St. Louis area over the weekend, leading to arrests and the disruption of business as demonstrators called for change following the Sept. 15 acquittal of Jason Stockley, a white police officer, in the 2011 death of Anthony Lamar Smith, a black man Stockley shot after a suspected drug deal.
Police arrested at least 22 people in a protest at the St. Louis Galleria on Saturday afternoon amid the continuing reaction.
On Saturday night, the protest group had moved to the Ritz Carlton hotel in Clayton and then outside the doors of the Target store in Brentwood. They left the area outside the store by about 8 p.m.
On Friday, some protestors began a night of demonstrations at the St. Louis Outlet Mall. But their intention to disrupt the mall is likely what caused the mall’s operators to announce it would close early, at 5 p.m.
Demonstrators then moved on to the Oktoberfest festival in St. Charles, a mostly white suburb.
