St. Louis Unemployment Rate Inches Up to 7.8 Percent in July

Seasonally adjusted unemployment in St. Louis inched up a tenth of a percentage point in July to 7.8 percent.

It marks the first time in nearly four years the area has recorded an unemployment rate below eight percent for two consecutive months.

The percentage as much reflects a decline in the labor force – approximately 20,000 fewer St. Louisans are working now than at the onset of the recession five years ago – than it does an improvement in the overall employment situation.
