Gov. Jay Nixon spent $1.7 million more than his office budget allowed during his first 2 1/2 years as governor by shifting some staff and travel expenses to other state agencies, an audit released today said.
The audit covers January 2009 to June 2011 — the period before the Republican-controlled Legislature added wording in budget bills prohibiting most state agencies from paying the staff or travel costs of the governor or other statewide officials.
